How to get a solid bass tune

Low frequencies take a moment to lock. A clean pluck and a quiet room make the biggest difference.

1

Pick your tuning

Select 4-String for standard EADG, 5-String for BEADG, or Drop D. The target note buttons update immediately for each configuration.

2

Pluck one string firmly

Bass needs a clean, definite pluck. Let the string ring and mute the others. Avoid palm-muting or playing too softly — the detector needs the fundamental to come through clearly.

3

Give low strings a moment

The low E and B strings have long wave periods. The detector may take a beat to lock on. Hold the note steady and wait for the display to stabilise before adjusting.

4

Fix octave readings

If a low string reads an octave too high, pluck slightly softer and move closer to the mic. Low-B on 5-string is the most prone to this — mute all other strings and pluck cleanly.

Bass tunings, notes included

Standard 4-string EADG covers almost all playing. Five-string adds a low B for extended range.

Questions, answered

Does it detect the low B on a 5-string bass?

Yes. The analysis buffer is set to 4096 samples on this page, which gives the autocorrelation enough resolution to lock onto B0 at 30.87 Hz. Pluck clearly with the other strings muted.

Why do my low strings keep jumping around?

Very low frequencies produce strong overtones that can fool the detector. Pluck the string cleanly, mute everything else, and move slightly closer to the microphone. Playing too hard can cause the second harmonic to dominate instead of the fundamental.

Do I need an audio interface?

No. Your laptop or phone mic will work in a reasonably quiet room. For the most reliable low-string detection, plugging your bass into an audio interface removes ambient noise from the signal path entirely.

Do I need to download anything?

No. The tuner runs entirely in your browser. Mic audio is processed locally and never uploaded.
